Farmhouse Interior Design Ideas

Big houses are inevitable. These are the places we all want to visit from time to time. In India these are farmhouses, often designed as secondary homes in the suburbs or rural areas. By their very nature, farmhouses echo rusticity, irreverence and indifference. Their inviting atmosphere is inherent in their design, a mismatch of traditional colors, decor and furniture otherwise found in apartments and townhouses. In olden times, farmhouses were built according to the shape of the surrounding area. The design was solid and centered. Surrounding buildings are added to the main structure based on need, use or functions that revolve around it. As the essentials were basic, so were the designs and decorations, a fuss-free, no-nonsense simplicity that allowed for active improvements and changes.

Prepare the exteriors.

A farmhouse-style home gives off the right vibes from the outside as well as the inside. The decor has to be aligned with a mix of comfort and charm. Architectural elements were very evident in the farmhouses of this era, an eclectic mix of design that was both inviting and warm. The basic design of the farmhouse is defined by the outer porch or verandah, reminiscent of old houses that surround the entire exterior of the space. A wrap-around porch can be difficult to replicate in modern times, but it’s still possible with decks with seating areas and railings. If space is a limitation, a simple front yard, with whimsical railings to mimic the balcony look will suffice. This design is not in terms of size but in accordance with the decor and design of such space. Fill that porch or balcony with rocking chairs or tea tables, hang some plants and place pots around. A few vines and creepers will add to this inviting atmosphere. Beautiful lighting can complete the look of a farmhouse.

Compliment it with wood.

A typical farmhouse look cannot be achieved by eliminating wood. Wood accents are casually chic and add to the charm of such homes. Wood can dominate the entire home or accents can be spread throughout, from banisters to hardwood floors, wood wall paneling to exposed beam ceilings. This look can be replicated regardless of home size and emphasizes a classic cottage-style appeal. Wood is available in a variety of finishes and colors, blends well with any interior design and ages beautifully. Conversely, if wood doesn’t appeal to you, raw, unsightly concrete and stone will work just as well.

Cozy and comfortable appeal

Farmhouse stands for simple, basic and frugal. The concept of this design came from the lack of access to modern materials. The first day everyone made do with what was available and a vibe where anyone was warmly welcomed. Carrying the farmhouse theme into the home means making sure everything is harmonious with simplicity. White as a main color blends well with wood accents and can be used to play with decor. Adding colorful accents to the furniture and upholstery adds brightness to the space. White infuses a typical, authentic, warm farmhouse aura.

Large kitchen and dining

Farmhouses have always placed more emphasis on the kitchen and dining areas. These spaces are larger, more enveloping, open and blend in with the rest of the room. With traditional farmhouses that see a lot of traffic in these areas, these spaces define the center and set the tone for the rest of the home. A farmhouse-style kitchen is uncomplicated and vibrant. The color scheme is mostly neutral, which can be combined with colorful highlights. Wood accents brighten up such kitchens, either with countertops, open shelves and cabinets or kitchen islands. Farmhouse-style kitchens look complete with dish racks, china and sinks that also reflect the vintage style. A large heavy vintage wooden table and chairs, antique chandeliers and lighting and exposed brick walls complete the space.

Open shelves and cabinets.

Open shelves, as mentioned earlier, can make a world of difference in replicating country-style farmhouses. Large open shelves made of wood dominating large sections of the walls are typical of older style homes. Cutlery and groceries are easy to access and use, simple rustic shelves add character to such a kitchen and shelves can be mixed and matched without sticking to specific colors or styles. Beautifully printed curtains and towels in untreated materials add an extra touch of rusticity to the home.

Cozy materials and fireplace

Heirloom decor, wood and hand-woven fabrics, textured materials bring a distinctive farmhouse look and chic style to the home, especially in the living room and bedroom. While cotton is an appropriate choice, simple stripes and checker patterns, floral motifs, lace and knits in different color accents and styles add color and warmth to a farmhouse-style home. This type of design allows for easy mixing of fabrics, eclectic combinations of furniture and furnishings.

Vintage and contemporary styles

A farmhouse look can be put together easily, with little tips and tricks anyone can use. Small side tables and ornate wooden cabinets, furnishing with light curtains and multifunctional furniture, old bathtubs with modern cabinetry – their combination combines vintage with contemporary style. As you peruse farmhouse interior design ideas, it’s important not to forget where the style originated. The trick is not to overdo it, but stick to the accessible, rustic and simple design theme. Such houses do not echo glass, metal, except to design part of the exterior facade to allow more natural light. Combining what you have with what you need can bring a farmhouse design style together.

Curate a luxurious bathroom with symmetrical interiors.

And what better way to enhance interiors than with symmetrical balance? Here are some simple tips you can incorporate the next time you’re planning a bathroom makeover.

Dual Vanity Unit: To bring harmonious balance to your bathroom interior design, opt for a dual vanity unit. Identical mirrors will make your bathroom look bigger and brighter, while double cabinets not only harmonize your space but also double your storage area. You can also choose hexagonal slate tiles for walls to inspire a geometric pattern in your bathroom. This bathroom design is not only seamless but also keeps your laundry unit and bathtub seamless.

Similar colors and patterns: In addition to the dual vanities and coordinated lighting settings, we used similar colors and patterns to balance the design in this bathroom. The beige color on the walls and floor provides a calm atmosphere, while the white laminate on the vanity unit matches the sink, bathtub and vessel, maintaining continuity throughout the space. You can also add two floating shelves on either side of the vanity unit to complete the symmetrical look while increasing the display space for your toiletries.

Things to avoid while designing the interior of your smooth house.

  • Do not go overboard with the harmony in the interiors as it will destroy the comfort of your home interior.
  • Try to avoid heavy furniture; Space-saving modern furniture is easy to incorporate into a home’s interior design
  • Too much pattern can be a sore to the eye; Balance the design with muted colors and indoor plants.
  • Avoid multiple pieces of furniture on the floor as it will take up unnecessary floor space and make your home look cluttered.
  • Go to a single focal point and balance the interiors around it. Too many focal points can create distraction.
  • Do not use multiple textures and finishes; Instead, play with two similar or contrasting finishes to create a harmonious balance
  • You don’t always need to create a mirror image between the two sides of the room for symmetry. Subtle changes like the ones mentioned above can also bring a distinct balance to the interiors of your home.

4 Reasons These Designers Are Totally Over Farmhouse Decor

Some version of the farmhouse decorating style has been in fashion since the first American pioneers set up their homes with simple handmade furnishings and iron kettles hanging over open fires.

More than 150 years later, when supercouple Chip and Joanna Gaines from Waco, Texas took farmhouse chic to new heights with a magnolia twist on home decor. Now you can hardly find a big box store that doesn’t display pieces to make today’s homeowners nostalgic for a simpler time.

The explosiveness of the trend is also rooted in the economy.

“After the recession in 2008, people didn’t want to look like they were spending a lot of money. What happened was people still wanted to hang out, go to restaurants, but they didn’t want to be flashy. “They wanted to be comfortable,” says New York City designer Lucy Harris of Lucy Harris Studios. “The restaurant started using design elements that felt authentic. So exposed filament light bulbs and white subway tile appeared in restaurants.” And the farmhouse came from there.

As with many things, when a style becomes the norm, people tend to move on. And the farmhouse looks like it’s showing signs of wearing out its people. Is it going the way of the dinosaurs? no way. This is likely to persist, especially in certain areas of the country. But some interior designers and decorators say enough is enough on at least some aspects of the look.

 Tired trends in home decor

1. The writing is on the wall.

At first, it was odd to have rustic signs, perhaps made from old pallets, that displayed a favorite saying, scripture, or idea in the house. And then, it got a little crazy.

Signs in the living room, reminding us to “Live, Laugh, Love.” A wall hanging in the bathroom exhorts you to “be a sweetheart.” Clear the whistle.” Or worse, large wooden letters in each room announcing where you are. Lest you forget and start looking for the fridge in the powder room.

“You can go far in a farmhouse,” says Central Texas interior designer Audrey Konkle. “The modern farmhouse is more streamlined, more simple. Then there’s the Hobby Lobby farmhouse with all the signs.

2. We don’t live in a barn

Sliding barn-style doors can work well in a tight space and add a bit of country flair. But not all doors are created equal, and this style definitely favors form over function.

“Barn doors are something we’ll look back on and say, ‘Oh my gosh! That was 2019, 2020 and before!'” says Rande Leaman of Rande Leaman Interior Design in Los Angeles. “

These doors offer little or no privacy as the sides are not sealed at all. This allows the sound — and, sadly, the odor — to escape the areas you’re trying to stay away from. It’s not something you want to find after installing one of these expensive items.

“The last one I put in, the client wanted it in the [primary] bathroom,” says Lemon. “I said ‘You’ll have room there, a little crack, if you’re not comfortable with it…’ and they weren’t. They kept it because it was too expensive, but they didn’t like it. “

About this term: Primary bathroom

Several real estate associations, including the National Association of Home Builders, have distinguished the term “master bedroom” (or “master bathroom”). “Primary bedroom” is the name now widely used in the real estate community and better reflects the room’s purpose.

Have small children at home? Go through the sliding door. “Practically speaking, especially with little kids. They love to push those doors on the track and they go flying like it’s a fun toy. As a mom, it would freak me out, ” says Lemon.

3. Has that ship sailed?

If HGTV’s hit show “Fixer Upper” brought anything to the home decor lexicon, it’s “shiplap.” What is that, exactly? It is a type of wooden plank that uses special grooves that, when snapped together, provide great protection against water and weather when used outdoors.

It is found in the walls of some older homes when the drywall is removed during renovations. That discovery can add depth to the character of such an adobe, but when it’s installed in a new build? It’s a disconnect that doesn’t add up for anything.

“My mantra is that you have to design for the home and the location. I want to be true to the home and the surroundings,” says Lemon. “You have to pay attention to the location, the bone of the house. As a designer, it gives us a lot of information.”

As with all design trends, when every home has shiplap, it’s no longer an unexpected find or a unique feature of the home. It’s also not sending the message you’re hoping for.

“[Shiplap] makes the design look ‘cheap’ or dated. It’s something a DIY person can do, and you can create a DIY experience,” says Courtney Eads of Traci Connell Interiors in Dallas. So don’t hire a designer.”

4. Does not play well with others

Many people have a mixed bag of personal tastes and styles that are reflected in their home — a mix of modern, mid-century and traditional, for example. But what goes well with a farmhouse aesthetic? A bit more farmhouse.

There is definitely something that is too much of a good thing. “It’s getting a little tired and overdone because people beat it to death. The kitchen signs, the farm-themed things in the kitchen all start to become kind of dated,” Lemmon says.

It looks like it may be time to put aspects of this home trend out to pasture.

A twist on the classic form compound

In his 1963 paper Interaction of Color, Joseph Albers observed that the most interesting thing about colors is that they observe changes in conditions. “Colors present themselves in constant flux,” he explained. “[They] are constantly dealing with neighbors and changing circumstances.” Reflecting on this trend, Bradford Shellhammer, vice president of buyer experience at eBay, will tell you that color also has a way of changing people who are slow enough to notice it.

Albers’ vision is brilliantly reflected in the 13-acre Stuyvesant, New York, countryside retreat owned by Shel Hammer and husband Georgie Balinoff. Within months, they transformed the three-bedroom 1840s farmhouse and eight outbuildings on the property (yes, you read that right) into a modernist Eden, hosting family and friends. So all the facilities were available for only two and a half hours. Manhattan. As a charming sign indicates, there’s a swimming pool, sauna, network of bars and lounges, movie theater, and vegetable patch, not to mention an abundance of quiet spots. In one family’s Long Island compound, two hallmarks of Hamptons architecture stand side by side: a 19th-century shingle-style saltbox with hydrangeas (they call it a farmhouse) and its ultra-modern foil-on-glass New Installed by York City Firm Architecture.

“East Hampton is our escape. It’s where we go to breathe and relax,” explains the client, who lives here with her husband and two sons. They acquired a tumbledown farmhouse in 2018 and knew they wanted a more contemporary counterpoint. “We needed to find an interior designer who could tie these two very different structures together.”

The client responded to New York City-based decorator Neil Beckstead’s expertise in what she calls “relaxed luxury,” a look she worked for architect Russell Groves for a decade before starting her own business in 2010. . For this project, Beckstead recalls, “the client wanted something that was understated and livable—not stuffy. A new approach for the Hamptons. And most importantly, “they weren’t afraid of color. were.” – Hannah Martin
